Abstract


Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate an oral health care program by school dental clinic for disabled students.

Methods: A dentist who was well experienced in caries examination surveyed the oral health status on 71 disabled children of a special school for disabled students July in 2005. Surveyed disabled students aged 8 to 28 years had been supplied with oral health care services by a dentist and a oral hygienist at school dental clinic established at their school supported fiom Changwon Community Health Center since 1997. The obtained data fiom these surveys were analyzed with the SPSS statistical package and discussed with a comparison of the data from other oral health reports on disabled group or nondisabled group examined in 2003 Korean National Oral Health Survey by Ministry of Health and Social
Welfare.

Results: Of the program disabled group aged 6-11 years, DMF rate was 23.1%, rate of students with active dental caries; 7.7%, DMFT score; 0.38, rate of DTIDMFT; 33.33%. These dental health data were evaluated to be lower compared with no benefited disabled group in Busan or Korea and undisabled group of 2003 Korean National Survey.

Conclusions: These results support that a significant reduction in dental caries can be resulted fiom the an oral health program for disabled students by school dental clinic which is initiated by the community health center.
